Another unlikely collaboration resulted in Chinese Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo becoming the latest Chinese person to win a Grammy Award this year. In a recent interview, Lhamo shared her life story and career story with us. The winning musical album is titled “Miho: Journey to the Mountain.” It was created in 2010 by Paul Winter, who has several Grammy Awards to his credit. Yungchen Lhamo performed as the only vocalist on the album. Yungchen Lhamo said, “I remember once singing the last song in the album, named ‘Morning Sunrise’. It was six o’clock in the morning. And a beam of sunshine just came across the window glass. After that, the hall was suddenly lightened up. I saw many audience members leave with tears in their eyes.”
However, winning the Grammy was something beyond her imagination.
Yungchen Lhamo said,”The moment I heard my name called I was over excited. But then when I stepped onto the stage, I had already calmed down and said to myself: it’s not my prize. It belongs to the entire team.”
Lhamo also ascribed her success to her unique background.
She said “China, my motherland, has offered me the most precious gifts. I have accumulated a lot of experiences, good and bad. They have been working together in shaping the person who I am today.”
Lhamo was a shepherd before 13 years old. Then she went to the university but later dropped out to pursue her musical dream. Since 1989 Yungchen Lhamo has emerged as the leading Tibetan vocalist on the world stage.
