A 13-year-old boy was killed and 30 others injured three seriously, on Tuesday morning when a “crowded” ascending subway escalator suddenly reversed direction, a spokeswoman for the subway operator said.
The incident happened at 9:36 a.m. at the A exit of the Zoo Station on Line 4.
Last night, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Quality Supervision has issued an urgent circular, calling for the immediate investigation of city-wide escalators and moving walkways to carry out any risks.
It is known that there are 126,000 sets of elevators, of which escalators and moving walkways are 14,000 units.
The circular required that all the organization, used elevators, should ensure the safety in accordance with regulations.
The circular also said that the districts and counties carry on safety self-examination for two weeks. The elevator equipment, without periodic inspection, failure to test and safe qualification, will not be allowed to continue to use.
