The panel that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Wednesday that a link likely exists between the COVID-19 vaccines and heart inflammation.
HEART INFLAMMATION CASES THREATEN CORONAVIRUS VACCINATION PACE
During the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meeting Wednesday, the Vaccine Safety Technical Work Group stated that “data available to date suggest likely association of myocarditis with mRNA vaccination in adolescents and young adults.”
Dr. Matthew Oster, a member of the COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force, said that “it does appear that the mRNA vaccine may be a new trigger from myocarditis.”
Thus far, the CDC has received over 1,200 preliminary reports of either myocarditis or pericarditis in people who received either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccines.
The bulk of those cases were reported after the second dose.
The median age of patients with heart inflammation after the second dose was 24.
Nearly 80% were male.
There were 484 reported cases for those under age 30.
Of those, 323 have met the CDC’s working definition of myocarditis or pericarditis.
Most of them, 309, were hospitalized, with 295 subsequently discharged.
About 79% have since recovered from their symptoms.
