The Chinese government fully endorses the reelection of Margaret Chan as director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Premier Wen Jiabao said Tuesday.
While meeting with Chan in Beijing, Wen praised her efforts over the past four years in improving the management and leadership of the WHO, saying that her efforts contributed to the WHO’s effective response to several public health crises, including the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.
Wen expressed his appreciation for the WHO’s support in the development of China’s public health system, adding that China wishes to further enhance its cooperation with the WHO as it continues to improve its own health care.
“The Chinese government will deepen reforms in its medical and health care systems and focus on the development of emerging medical industries,” Wen said.
Chan said she appreciates the support that the Chinese government has offered for the WHO and herself.
She spoke highly of China’s achievements in public health, adding that she hopes to play a positive role in both reforming the WHO and developing global medical care as a whole.
The 64-year-old Chan took office as WHO’s director-general in January 2007. She is nearing the end of her five-year term.
