China seeks friendly, cooperative relationship with South Sudan: envoy

UNITED NATIONS, July 13 (Xinhua) — China seeks to build a long-term, healthy, stable, friendly and cooperative relationship with South Sudan on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence, a Chinese envoy to the United Nations said here on Wednesday.

Wang Min, deputy permanent representative of the Chinese Mission to the UN made the remarks at a Security Council meeting on Sudan following a resolution unanimously adopted by the Council to recommend the newly independent South Sudan to be admitted as the 193rd member of the UN.

Wang told the Council that the Chinese people and people of South Sudan share deep traditional friendship and common desire to strengthen friendly exchanges. China has established diplomatic relationship with South Sudan, beginning a new chapter of relations between the two countries.

“China will establish and develop a long-term, healthy, stable, friendly and cooperative relationship with South Sudan on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence,” Wang said. “China supports South Sudan’s application to become a member of the UN. We look forward to the historical moment when South Sudan will become the 193rd member and to strengthen our comprehensive cooperation with the country within the framework of the UN.”

“China also sincerely wishes the young South Sudan to continue to achieve new accomplishment in its efforts of state-building and development so as to become a positive force in maintaining peace and stability as well as promoting common development,” he said. ” China will continue to provide assistance within its ability for the development of South Sudan.”

In addition, China called on the international community to continue to support South Sudan in realizing political stability and provide effective assistance for its economic recovery and development.

Concerning the relations between Sudan and South Sudan, Wang said that tolerance, mutual understanding and enhanced cooperation between the two countries is the only option for peace coexistence and common development. “We hope that the two countries will continue to focus on the overall situation of peace and wellbeing of the two peoples and find a proper solution to the outstanding issues of Comprehensive Peace Agreement through dialogue and negotiation,” he said.

Wang noted that the government of Sudan has exhibited its political will to facilitate peace process between the North and South, and has made tremendous efforts in this regard. China called on the international community to normalize its relations soon with Sudan so that its people can enjoy peace, dignity and development.
