Chinese vice premier stresses efforts to prevent floods, drought

Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Tuesday urged governments at all levels to do more to prevent flood disasters.

The possibility of severe floods “cannot be underestimated,” Hui said at a meeting of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

The flood-control work still faces severe challenges because more typhoons have been forecast to hit the country and rainfalls will be much more than expected in some regions during the rest of the year, he said.

Hui ordered local authorities and observatories to intensify monitoring and ensure the safety of facilities such as reservoirs and major infrastructure in cities.

He demanded better preparation for timely evacuation in regions vulnerable to typhoons and floods.

Meanwhile, drought will continue to ravage in some regions, where efforts should be made to battle drought to guarantee a bumper harvest this year, he said.
