Vice President Xi Jinping said Wednesday that he hopes the members of the Hong Kong Federation of Overseas Chinese Associations (HKFOCA) will make more contributions toward creating long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong.
Xi made the remarks while meeting a visiting delegation of the HKFOCA, a nonprofit organization made up of overseas Chinese living in Hong Kong, at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.
Xi said he hopes the delegation members will continue to support the chief executive and the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). He also urged the delegation to support and join in the Chinese mainland’s drive for modernization.
Xi said he hopes the organization will continue to promote exchanges between overseas Chinese across the Taiwan Strait in order to promote the reunification of China.
In his address, Xi praised the achievements that the HKFOCA has made since its founding in 2004.
Xi said that over the past 14 years, the HKSAR government, under the leadership of the central government, has helped Hong Kong to successfully withstand both the global financial crisis and the 2003 SARS outbreak, as well as helped it to become a globally recognized economic center.
The efficacy of the HKSAR government has helped to increase Hong Kong residents’ understanding of and confidence in the “one country, two systems” principle, Xi said.
