Atifete Jahjaga has been elected as president of Kosovo by the country’s national assembly. Two thirds of the 120 member Assembly voted for the former police officer in the first round, one week after the highest court ruled that the election of businessman Behgjet Pacolli was unconstitutional. Jahjaga says she will do her outmost to ensure Kosovo can display its best democratic and constitutional values. Her election is the result of a compromise between the main political parties, which limits her mandate to 18 months, after which the president will be elected directly by the public.
