The Chinese Education Ministry has approved a plan by the United States based New York University (NYU) to start a separate and full degree granting campus in Shanghai. The construction of the university campus has begun.
According to a China Daily report, Yu Lizhong, president of Shanghai based East China Normal University (ECNU) said that “In the globalization era, we Chinese and American partners are trying to cultivate innovative international talents by providing opportunities to share global educational resources and experience diverse cultures.”
East China Normal University is already a NYU’s partner in establishing the NYU Shanghai campus. ECNU was built in October 1951 and it is a key institution in China to provide higher learning and major opportunities for the students.
The New York University (NYU) Shanghai campus is China’s first international university which is co-established by the two world’s renowned universities.
According to the report, the first session of undergraduates at the NYU Shanghai campus will start in 2013 and it is also expected that the university will provide accommodations to approximately 3,000 Chinese and International students.
Furthermore, talking about the syllabus and the curricula, Ms. Yu discussed that the syllabuses and curricula of NYU Shanghai will be followed by the world’s leading universities and also the new university would encourage feature multitalented education, English lectures and small classes for open discussions. It will also provide scholarships to some excellent students with preference given to those from underprivileged families, Yu added.
That NYU shanghai will teach social science subjects before the students choose their majors. That would be very helpful for the students whose major are science and technology and they do not have the chance to choose courses in social sciences, to have better understanding of both fields. Ms. Yu also explained that the faculty-student ratio in the NYU Shanghai would be twice the average in Chinese universities. The founding of the NYU Shanghai campus is in fact part of NYU’s plan aimed at becoming a Global Network of Universities. The New York University already has campuses in London and Abu-Dhabi.
It is also expected that undergraduate students from NYU Shanghai campus will be allowed to go or transfer their semesters at the Abu Dhabi or London Campuses. It would be a great opportunity for the Chinese students to learn diverse cultures and traditions.
The university in shanghai is located within the Luijiazui financial and trade zone in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area.
