The Chinese government is undertaking a relocation project for the people in Shaanxi province, Northwest China. The project which is worth about 14 billion Yuan ($ 2.14 billion) will take the people out of remote mountainous areas to more liveable regions.
According to China Daily, this project is prompted by health concerns or dangers, and is particularly for people living in the northern area of Shaanxi , the mountainous areas where poverty level is so high and it is considered as the most poverty stricken province in China. About 392,000 people will benefit from the supply of safe and clean water, and other necessary things for living, thanks to the project.
The current project will involve eight counties and 90 towns in Shaanxi near Yulin and Yan’an cities. Some 268,000 people there will be the first to be moved out in the next five years.
Shaanxi Province is one of the most important cradles of ancient Chinese civilization. The Province is located in the very heart of China. Boasting a population of more than 36 million in an area of over 200,000 square kilometers (about 77,225 square miles), Shaanxi includes most of the middle stretch of the Yellow River. It borders Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, Gansu and Ningxia.
According to China Daily, the provincial government had once dug wells, constructed several water cellars in Shaanxi province in 1980 but these projects could not help all the people who were living in those areas.
The leader of the Beijing based institute of public and environment affairs, Ma Jun has said that if people will drink water which contains excessive amounts of fluorine then it would be really very harmful for the teeth and gradually, it can affect people’s health overall.
The Chinese government is doing a very commendable job to relocate the people of Shaanxi that could save many lives in the future because clean water is very important for health.
