After a string of defeats in the 1970s and 1980s, the Democratic Party made a conscious decision to radically change its character, its real core constituencies and funding base, and actual ideology (as distinct from the political branding it continues to propagate).
Its character, orientation and mentality are now clear. Matt Stoller’s 2016 article in The Atlantic — entitled “How the Democrats Killed Their Populist Soul” — tells that story as well as possible.
